Description

The 1971 Steinberger Riesling Beerenauslese from Staatsweingüter Eltville—today associated with the historic Kloster Eberbach estate—is a remarkable example of mature Rheingau sweet wine. Produced from selectively harvested, nobly sweet grapes and presented as a Versteigerung, or auction wine, it reflects both the exceptional quality of the Steinberg vineyard and the long-standing tradition of Germany’s finest wine auctions.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, with the colour and concentration expected from a mature Beerenauslese of this age. Its complex bouquet combines ripe and preserved fruit with notes of honey, warm spice and developed tertiary nuances. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied and concentrated, balanced by a lively thread of acidity that keeps the sweetness poised and fresh. The finish is long and lingering, with honeyed fruit and spice returning on the close. At more than five decades old, it is a fully mature wine that should be enjoyed now; its future will depend greatly on provenance, fill level and storage conditions.

Production
The wine comes from Steinberg, one of the Rheingau’s historic vineyard sites at Kloster Eberbach, where Riesling benefits from the region’s favourable conditions for producing concentrated, long-lived sweet wines. Beerenauslese is made from individually selected, highly ripe grapes, often affected by noble rot, which naturally concentrates sugars, flavours and acidity. The 1971 wine was bottled for the estate’s prestigious auction, highlighting the selection’s exceptional quality.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to reveal its aromatic complexity without muting the palate. Its concentrated sweetness and balancing acidity make it an excellent partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, apple tart and mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring slowly can help separate any natural sediment. Given its age, handle and open it gently.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and has played a central role in the development of Rheingau wine culture for centuries. The estate’s Staatsweingüter tradition is closely associated with the production and presentation of high-quality wines from the region’s most distinguished vineyards. Its auction wines, including this 1971 Steinberger Beerenauslese, represent some of the estate’s most selective and age-worthy bottlings.
