Description

A rare 1969 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Rüdesheimer Bronnen, produced by Staatsweingüter Eltville (Kloster Eberbach) in the Rheingau. Representing one of Germany’s highest Prädikat categories, this mature sweet wine is a remarkable collector’s bottle, combining concentrated fruit, honeyed richness and the characteristic complexity of botrytised Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to display a deep golden hue, with the colour and aromatic intensity that come from more than five decades of bottle age. Its bouquet is rich and mature, offering notes of ripe and dried fruit, honey and a delicate touch of noble botrytis. On the palate, it is full-bodied and sweet, with concentrated fruit flavours balanced by Riesling’s refreshing acidity. The long, layered finish should reveal further mature nuances, making this a wine to savour slowly. As a 1969 vintage, it is best approached as a mature collectible wine; its condition and remaining ageing potential will depend greatly on storage history and fill level.

Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is reserved for exceptionally concentrated grapes, traditionally harvested individually after noble rot has shrivelled the berries and intensified their sugars and flavours. Made from Riesling in the Rüdesheimer Bronnen vineyard of the Rheingau, this wine reflects the region’s long tradition of producing elegant, age-worthy sweet wines. Specific details regarding the vineyard’s soil, harvest date and vinification are not available.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, either as an aperitif or alongside foie gras, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and blue or mature cheeses. Its sweetness and acidity also make it a particularly fine match for apple, pear and apricot desserts. Decanting is generally not essential for a mature sweet Riesling, although carefully standing the bottle upright and gently pouring it into a clean decanter can help separate any sediment. Open shortly before serving and handle the bottle with care.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with the historic Kloster Eberbach estate, represents the long-standing winemaking tradition of the Rheingau, one of Germany’s most renowned Riesling regions. Kloster Eberbach has played an important role in the area’s wine history, while the Staatsweingüter name reflects the region’s historic state-run wine production. This 1969 bottling offers a rare glimpse into that heritage and is suited both to collectors and to enthusiasts of mature German sweet wines.
