Description

A rare piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1934 Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Staatsweingüter Eltville (Kloster Eberbach) represents the extraordinary longevity of traditionally made German sweet wines. Auctioned as a Cabinet Versteigerung bottling and matured for decades in the historic cellars of Kloster Eberbach, it is a highly collectable wine available only in very limited quantities.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its remarkable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is rich with aromas of honey, dried apricot and ripe peach, complemented by the complex, oxidative tones that can develop in a beautifully aged sweet Riesling. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously sweet, yet remains balanced by Riesling’s fine acidity. The combination of luscious fruit, honeyed richness and refreshing structure creates an elegant, lingering finish. At more than 90 years old, this is a fully mature wine intended primarily for immediate enjoyment; further ageing depends greatly on its storage history and bottle condition.

Production
The wine comes from Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland, one of the renowned vineyard sites along the steep slopes of the Rheingau. The Trockenbeerenauslese designation indicates a selection of individually harvested, naturally shrivelled grapes with highly concentrated sugars and flavours, traditionally shaped by noble rot. The grapes were hand-selected before being vinified into a concentrated Riesling sweet wine and matured over many decades in the cellars of Kloster Eberbach.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to unfold in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and apricot or peach pastries. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but careful decanting may be considered if sediment is present; for a wine of this age, gentle handling is recommended.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s historic wine institutions, founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and closely associated with the development of Rheingau viticulture. The Staatsweingüter Eltville, now linked with the state’s historic winery tradition, have long been respected for producing and preserving distinguished wines from the region’s finest sites. Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland and the historic auction tradition of Cabinet Versteigerung underline the wine’s provenance and collectable character.
