Description

A rare auction-bottled Riesling from the exceptional 1976 vintage, this Rauenthaler Baiken Trockenbeerenauslese was produced by Staatsweingüter Eltville, the historic state winery associated with Kloster Eberbach. Made from intensely concentrated, noble-rot-affected grapes, it offers the remarkable sweetness, balance and longevity for which the finest Rheingau dessert wines are renowned.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, often with amber reflections that reflect its considerable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is layered with honey, ripe peach, apricot and citrus, accompanied by the complex dried-fruit and candied notes that can develop in a well-preserved Trockenbeerenauslese. On the palate, it is rich, sweet and intensely fruity, with luscious flavours of apricot, honey and preserved citrus supported by refreshing Riesling acidity. The finish is long and persistent, balancing opulence with lift. At nearly five decades old, it is best approached as a mature wine to enjoy now; its further potential depends greatly on storage conditions and bottle provenance.

Production
The wine comes from Rauenthaler Baiken, a distinguished Rheingau vineyard site known for producing concentrated and age-worthy Riesling. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually selected, shrivelled grapes, typically affected by noble rot, which concentrates sugars, acidity and flavour. The grapes from the 1976 harvest were carefully selected and made into a sweet Riesling with the intensity required for an auction-quality bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C, allowing the wine time to open in the glass. It is an excellent match for fruit-based desserts, apricot tart, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue cheese, while its balance also makes it a memorable aperitif. Decanting is generally unnecessary for an old sweet Riesling, although carefully standing the bottle upright and pouring gently can help separate any natural sediment; a short airing in the bottle or glass is preferable to prolonged decanting.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville is closely linked with Kloster Eberbach, one of Germany’s most historic wine estates, founded by Cistercian monks in 1136. The estate has played a major role in establishing the Rheingau’s reputation for outstanding Riesling and noble sweet wines. Its auction wines are traditionally associated with carefully selected lots and exceptional vintages, making this 1976 Rauenthaler Baiken Trockenbeerenauslese a notable piece of Rheingau wine history.
