Description
A rare 1971 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Rauenthaler Baiken, produced by the historic Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach and released as a Versteigerung wine. Made from exceptionally concentrated, late-harvested grapes, this is a mature Rheingau sweet wine with remarkable richness, balance and cellaring heritage.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden colour, reflecting both its original concentration and decades of bottle age. Its complex bouquet brings together honey, ripe peach, dried apricot and citrus, with the mature, layered character expected of a well-preserved Trockenbeerenauslese. On the palate it is sweet, generous and fruit-driven, supported by refreshing acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and lingering, with a harmonious balance of sweetness and citrus freshness. At more than 50 years old, it is ready to enjoy now; further ageing depends greatly on storage conditions and the individual condition of the bottle.
Production
Rauenthaler Baiken is one of the notable vineyard sites of the Rheingau, a region shaped by steep slopes and a cool climate that help Riesling retain its vital acidity. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually selected, exceptionally ripe grapes, typically concentrated by noble rot and natural dehydration. The precious must is fermented carefully to preserve its intense fruit character and sweetness, before extended bottle maturation. As a historic auction bottling, this wine represents a particularly select selection from the 1971 vintage.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally at around 10–12°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot tart, crème brûlée and blue cheese, while its acidity also makes it an elegant aperitif. Decanting is not usually essential for an older sweet Riesling; instead, open it carefully and pour gently, or use a small decanter briefly if sediment is present and the wine appears robust.
Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s most historically significant wine estates, founded in the Rheingau in the twelfth century by Cistercian monks. Today, the Staatsweingüter Eltville continues the estate’s long tradition of producing distinguished Rieslings and other wines from the region’s finest sites. The estate’s auction wines are associated with exceptional lots and the Rheingau’s historic tradition of presenting rare, high-quality wines through specialist auctions.
