Description

A remarkable 1976 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Rauenthaler Baiken, one of the Rheingau’s celebrated vineyard sites and a historic wine of Staatsweingüter Eltville, Kloster Eberbach. As one of Germany’s highest Prädikat categories, Trockenbeerenauslese represents exceptional concentration, made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes. After decades of maturation, this 0.7-litre bottle offers a rare opportunity to experience the richness and longevity of a great Rheingau sweet wine.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, reflecting both its original concentration and long bottle age. Its aromatic profile is richly layered, with notes of ripe and dried fruit, honey and a delicate mineral character. On the palate, it is full and intensely flavoured, balancing luscious sweetness with the refreshing acidity that is a hallmark of fine Riesling. The finish is long, persistent and memorable. With careful storage, a wine of this style and vintage may continue to evolve in bottle, making it especially appealing to collectors and lovers of mature sweet wines.

Production
Sourced from the Rauenthaler Baiken vineyard in the Rheingau, the wine reflects a site renowned for producing elegant, long-lived Riesling. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from highly concentrated grapes that have shrivelled on the vine, often through the influence of noble rot, concentrating sugars, flavour and acidity. Such wines are produced from meticulously selected fruit and are prized for their intensity, rarity and exceptional ageing potential.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, either as a contemplative wine on its own or alongside desserts featuring fruit, vanilla or caramel. It also pairs beautifully with rich blue cheeses and other mature cheeses, where its sweetness and acidity provide balance. Decanting is not usually necessary, although carefully pouring the wine into a clean decanter can help separate any sediment that may have formed during its long maturation.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with the historic Kloster Eberbach, represents one of the Rheingau’s most respected wine traditions. Kloster Eberbach has played a significant role in the region’s viticultural history for centuries, with a particular reputation for outstanding Riesling and the production of wines built for extended ageing. This 1976 Rauenthaler Baiken Trockenbeerenauslese reflects that heritage, combining the character of a distinguished Rheingau site with the rarity of a mature, high-register German dessert wine.
