Description
A rare 1973 Riesling from Rauenthaler Baiken, one of the Rheingau’s celebrated steep-slope vineyards, produced by the historic Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach. Combining the concentration associated with Beerenauslese and Eiswein production, this mature sweet wine offers a remarkable glimpse into the character and ageing potential of fine German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, indicative of its considerable age and concentration. Its bouquet is rich and layered, with aromas of ripe and preserved fruit, honey, sweet spice and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously sweet, with concentrated fruit flavours balanced by the refreshing acidity typical of Riesling. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering honeyed fruit, spice and mineral notes. At more than five decades old, it should be approached as a mature wine; its condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on storage and bottle provenance.
Production
The wine comes from the steep Rauenthaler Baiken vineyard in the Rheingau, where Riesling benefits from sun-exposed slopes and mineral-rich soils. According to the supplied description, the grapes were hand-selected and harvested at exceptional ripeness, using a combination of Beerenauslese and Eiswein-style selection to achieve pronounced natural concentration and sweetness. The resulting wine was made to preserve the fruit, acidity and aromatic intensity of the grapes, allowing it to develop complexity over many years in bottle.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s aromas to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine or digestif. Decanting is generally not essential for an old sweet Riesling, but carefully standing the bottle upright before serving and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a short period in a suitable decanter may be considered if the wine appears closed.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville is closely associated with Kloster Eberbach, the historic Rheingau winery founded by Cistercian monks in 1136. The estate has played a defining role in the region’s wine history and is particularly renowned for producing age-worthy Riesling from distinguished vineyard sites. This 1973 Rauenthaler Baiken bottling reflects that long tradition, offering collectors and lovers of mature German wine an opportunity to experience a historic Rheingau vintage.
