Description

A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, the 1978 Rauenthaler Baiken Riesling Eiswein-Auslese Versteigerung comes from Staatsweingüter Eltville, better known through its historic association with Kloster Eberbach. Made from grapes harvested under Eiswein conditions and released as an auction wine, this rare 0.7-litre bottle offers both exceptional sweetness and the complexity of more than four decades of bottle age.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden appearance, with its mature colour reflecting its long development in bottle. Its bouquet is intensely aromatic, combining ripe peach, apricot and mango with notes of honey and the nuanced richness associated with mature sweet Riesling. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, balancing pronounced sweetness with the refreshing acidity that gives great Riesling its longevity. The finish should be lingering and complex, with layers of ripe fruit and honey. At this age, it is best approached as a mature wine: ready to enjoy now, with further cellaring dependent on storage conditions and the individual bottle.

Production
The wine comes from the Rauenthaler Baiken vineyard in the Rheingau, a celebrated site whose steep terrain and favourable exposure are well suited to producing finely structured Riesling. Eiswein is made from healthy grapes harvested and pressed while naturally frozen, concentrating sugars, acidity and flavour. The fruit was hand-selected, and the resulting wine was matured over many years in the historic cellars of Staatsweingüter Eltville before being offered as a special Versteigerung, or auction, bottling.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its sweetness, acidity and mature fruit profile make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apple tart, pâtisserie and blue cheese; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but careful opening and gentle aeration in the glass can help reveal its aromas. Because of its age, avoid prolonged exposure to air and serve promptly once opened.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and has played a formative role in the history of Rheingau viticulture. Today, Staatsweingüter Eltville represents this long winemaking tradition and remains associated with some of the region’s most distinguished vineyard sites and historic auction wines. The 1978 Rauenthaler Baiken Eiswein-Auslese reflects the estate’s reputation for producing age-worthy, characterful Riesling of exceptional provenance.
