Description

A rare 1979 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from the celebrated Hochheimer Domdechaney vineyard, produced by Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach. As an auction bottling, this exceptionally sweet Rheingau wine represents one of Germany’s most prestigious historic wine categories and offers collectors a chance to experience a fully mature vintage.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden to amber appearance, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Aromas of dried and ripe yellow fruit, honey and preserved citrus are complemented by the complex, mellow notes that develop in a fine, mature dessert wine. On the palate, it should be rich and luscious, with concentrated fruit sweetness balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity. Flavours of honeyed fruit and dried apricot may unfold with further air, while the long finish should reveal the wine’s depth and remarkable ageing potential. Stored under excellent conditions, it is ready to enjoy now, although its precise development will depend on bottle provenance and storage history.

Production
Made from Riesling grapes affected by noble rot and selected at an exceptionally high level of ripeness, Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s most concentrated and rarest Prädikat wines. The grapes are harvested individually as shrivelled berries, then gently pressed to produce a small amount of intensely sweet must. This 1979 wine comes from the prestigious Hochheimer Domdechaney site in the Rheingau and was released as a limited auction bottling by the historic Staatsweingüter Eltville.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow the wine’s aromas and mature complexity to develop. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie, blue cheese and foie gras, while its acidity also makes it enjoyable on its own as a contemplative finale. Decanting is not usually necessary for an old dessert wine; instead, open it carefully and pour gently, or allow it to breathe briefly in the bottle before serving.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s most historic wine estates, founded in the Rheingau by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. Today, its wines are produced under the Staatsweingüter Eltville name and remain closely associated with the region’s finest vineyards and traditional quality standards. The estate’s auction wines are particularly sought after for their rarity, provenance and representation of Germany’s great sweet-wine tradition.
