Description

A rare 1953 Riesling from Hochheimer Domdechaney in the Rheingau, produced by Staatsweingüter Eltville, today associated with the historic Kloster Eberbach tradition. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, it was made from exceptionally ripe, naturally concentrated grapes, offering a remarkable opportunity to experience a mature German sweet wine from one of the post-war era’s historic vintages.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, characteristic of its age and concentration. Its complex bouquet combines honeyed notes with dried and ripe apricot, peach and citrus, alongside the mature richness expected from a wine that has spent decades in bottle. On the palate, it is sweet, concentrated and balanced by refreshing acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with layers of fruit and honey gradually unfolding. A bottle of this age should be approached as a mature wine and enjoyed for its evolved character rather than expected to develop indefinitely; careful storage and provenance will be important considerations.

Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is one of Germany’s highest levels of naturally sweet wine, traditionally produced from individually selected, overripe grapes that have often been affected by noble rot and partially shrivelled on the vine. The fruit’s reduced water content creates intense sugar and flavour concentration, while the Rheingau’s Riesling-friendly climate and moderating influence of the Rhine help retain the acidity needed to balance the sweetness. Specific harvesting and vinification details for this historic 1953 bottle are not available.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to emerge. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and lightly sweet pastries, while its acidity can also complement blue cheese or foie gras. Decanting is not normally essential for a mature sweet Riesling, but the bottle may benefit from careful opening and a gentle pour to separate any sediment; tasting a small amount first is recommended.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville was part of the historic Rheingau state-winery tradition closely linked with Kloster Eberbach, one of Germany’s most important wine institutions. Founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, Kloster Eberbach played a formative role in establishing the Rheingau’s reputation for fine Riesling and Pinot Noir. The Hochheimer Domdechaney vineyard, located in Hochheim at the eastern end of the Rheingau, is recognised for producing richly flavoured, age-worthy wines.
