Description
The 1985 Hochheimer Domdechaney Riesling Beerenauslese from Staatsweingüter Eltville (Kloster Eberbach) is a mature Rheingau dessert wine with remarkable concentration and cellar-aged complexity. Made from individually selected, nobly sweet grapes, it reflects both the exceptional character of the vintage and the long winemaking tradition of one of Germany’s most historic estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Beerenauslese shows a deep golden colour, consistent with its age and richness. The bouquet is layered with aromas of ripe and dried fruit, honey and delicate spice, while extended bottle maturation adds further depth and aromatic complexity. On the palate, it is generously sweet and full-bodied, balanced by Riesling’s refreshing acidity. Flavours of mature fruit, honey and warm spice lead into a long, lingering finish with a comforting, elegant character.
At this stage, the wine should be approached as a mature collector’s bottle, with its condition depending on storage and provenance. Properly preserved examples can offer a rewarding experience now, combining sweetness, acidity and developed tertiary notes.
Production
The grapes come from the Hochheimer Domdechaney vineyard in the Rheingau, a site renowned for producing expressive, structured Riesling. As a Beerenauslese, the wine was made from carefully selected, naturally concentrated grapes harvested at a high level of ripeness. The resulting must was fermented and matured to preserve the balance between luscious sweetness, aromatic intensity and Riesling’s characteristic acidity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a few minutes in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. Decanting is not usually essential, but a careful transfer can help separate any sediment in this mature bottle; alternatively, open it gently and pour slowly. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese and fruit-based desserts, while its complexity also suits a refined dessert course or a special occasion served on its own.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with the historic Kloster Eberbach, represents one of the Rheingau’s most distinguished winemaking traditions. Kloster Eberbach was founded in the 12th century and has played a central role in the development and reputation of German Riesling and other fine wines. The estate’s long history, celebrated vineyards and focus on quality make this 1985 Beerenauslese a notable example of mature Rheingau dessert wine.
