Description
A remarkable 1987 Riesling Eiswein from Heppenheim’s historic Centgericht vineyard in the Hessische Bergstraße, bottled by the Staatsweingüter Eltville, Kloster Eberbach. With an exceptional must weight of 210° Oechsle, this rare dessert wine combines natural concentration with the freshness that defines great Riesling Eiswein. Its age and provenance make it an especially interesting bottle for collectors and lovers of mature sweet wines.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a mature golden to amber hue, depending on storage conditions. Its intensely expressive nose reveals layers of ripe and dried fruit, honey, candied citrus and subtle spice, with the developed complexity characteristic of a well-preserved mature Eiswein.
On the palate, it is richly sweet and full-bodied, balanced by refreshing Riesling acidity. Concentrated fruit, honeyed notes and warming spice lead into a long, persistent finish. At this stage, the wine is mature and ready to enjoy, although a well-stored bottle may continue to evolve in bottle. As with any mature wine, its condition will depend greatly on provenance and storage.
Production
The grapes came from the Heppenheim Centgericht vineyard in the Hessische Bergstraße, a region known for its favourable climate and Riesling cultivation. Eiswein is made from grapes harvested while naturally frozen, concentrating sugars, acids and flavour compounds as frozen water remains behind in the press. A must weight of 210° Oechsle indicates an exceptionally concentrated harvest. Further details of the 1987 vinification are not available, but the wine was bottled in the traditional 750 ml format.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This mature Eiswein is excellent with fruit-based desserts, apple or pear tart, crème brûlée and lightly sweet pastries, while its acidity also makes it a fine match for blue cheese, foie gras or rich pâté. Decanting is generally not essential; if the bottle contains sediment, pour it gently into a clean decanter shortly before serving. A small dessert-wine glass will best capture its aromas.
Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s historic wine estates, founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 in the Rheingau. The estate became renowned for its Riesling and Pinot Noir, and its wines have long played an important role in the reputation of the Rheingau and surrounding Hessian wine regions. The Staatsweingüter Eltville designation reflects the state-owned wine estate associated with this distinguished historic producer.
