Description
A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1967 Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Weißherbst Beerenauslese was produced by the historic Staatsweingüter Eltville, now associated with Kloster Eberbach. Made from exceptionally ripe Pinot Noir grapes harvested from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyards, it offers collectors the rare opportunity to experience a mature German Beerenauslese from an outstanding historic vintage.
Tasting Notes
As a Weißherbst made from Spätburgunder, this wine would traditionally display a deep rosé to copper-gold colour, potentially intensified by its considerable age. The mature bouquet is expected to show layers of preserved red berries, cherries, dried fruit, spice and evolved tertiary nuances. On the palate, the hallmark of a Beerenauslese is the balance between concentrated sweetness and refreshing acidity, giving the wine richness as well as structure.
After more than five decades in bottle, the wine should be approached as a mature collector’s bottling rather than a youthful dessert wine. Its condition and evolution will depend greatly on storage, fill level and cork integrity. It is best enjoyed soon after opening, while carefully stored bottles may still offer a fascinating glimpse into the character of historic Rheingau wines.
Production
The grapes came from the steep, highly regarded slopes of Assmannshäuser Höllenberg in the Rheingau, a site particularly renowned for Pinot Noir. Beerenauslese requires the selective hand-harvesting of individually overripe, often noble-rot-affected berries, resulting in highly concentrated must. According to the supplied information, the grapes were gently pressed and the wine matured in oak casks, allowing its fruit, sweetness and acidity to develop greater complexity over time.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its sweetness and mature fruit character make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie, blue cheese or foie gras, while a small glass can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative finale. Decanting is not usually necessary for an aged Beerenauslese, but opening it carefully and allowing a short period of aeration may help reveal its aromas; stand the bottle upright beforehand if sediment is present.
Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, closely linked with the historic Kloster Eberbach estate, represents one of the Rheingau’s most important winegrowing traditions. Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century and has played a defining role in the development and reputation of German wine. This 1967 bottling reflects that long heritage and is particularly notable for its combination of a prestigious vineyard site, Pinot Noir Weißherbst style and Beerenauslese level of ripeness.
