Description

A rare 1966 Eiswein-Auslese from Assmannshäuser Höllenberg, produced by the Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach and presented as a Cabinet auction wine from barrel no. 33. Made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), it reflects the Rheingau’s long tradition of producing distinctive, age-worthy wines from exceptional vintages and carefully selected parcels.

Tasting Notes
The wine is described as deep red in colour, with the concentration expected from grapes harvested at a naturally frozen stage. Its mature bouquet combines dark berries and cherries with a subtle, finely integrated note of oak from barrel ageing. On the palate, expect a distinctive balance between sweetness and refreshing acidity, supported by concentrated fruit and a long, elegant finish. As a wine from 1966, it is fully mature and should be approached as a historic cellar release; its condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on storage, fill level and provenance.

Production
The Spätburgunder grapes were hand-selected from the steep slopes of Assmannshäuser Höllenberg in the Rheingau. They were harvested during winter while frozen, concentrating the must and allowing the wine to be produced in the Eiswein style. The wine was subsequently matured in oak, contributing a delicate woody nuance alongside its concentrated fruit character.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s sweetness, acidity and mature aromas to show clearly. Its concentrated profile can accompany richly flavoured meat dishes, while the sweet, fruit-driven character also makes it suitable with dark chocolate, mature cheese or a dessert course. Decanting is optional: for a mature bottle, a careful, brief decant may help separate any sediment, but prolonged aeration is best avoided until the wine has been tasted.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, associated with the historic Kloster Eberbach estate, represents one of the Rheingau’s most established wine traditions. Kloster Eberbach has played a significant role in the region’s viticultural history for centuries, with a reputation built on carefully selected vineyards and wines of long ageing potential. This 1966 auction bottling is a particularly distinctive example, linking the estate’s heritage with the prestigious Assmannshäuser Höllenberg vineyard.
