Description

A rare and captivating historic sweet wine, the 1970 Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder Beerenauslese was produced by Staatsweingüter Eltville, the renowned estate associated with Kloster Eberbach. Made from exceptionally ripe Pinot Noir grapes, it combines the depth of red wine with the concentration, sweetness and longevity of a Beerenauslese—a distinctive expression of Rheingau wine history.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, mature colour, characteristic of a well-aged red Beerenauslese. Its complex bouquet reveals layers of ripe and dried fruit, warm spice and subtle vanilla, with the evolution expected from more than five decades of bottle age. On the palate, it is rich, concentrated and full-bodied, balancing its pleasant sweetness with lively acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with mature fruit and spice notes lingering gracefully. As a 1970 vintage, it is a fully mature wine and should be enjoyed for its current complexity; its condition and remaining freshness will naturally depend on storage and provenance.

Production
Assmannshäuser Höllenberg is one of the Rheingau’s historic sites, known particularly for producing expressive Spätburgunder. Beerenauslese is made from individually selected, exceptionally ripe berries, often influenced by noble rot, which naturally concentrates sugars, aromas and flavour. While detailed vintage-specific production records are not provided, the wine reflects the traditional approach of careful selection and gentle vinification used to preserve the balance between sweetness, concentration and acidity.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 12–14°C, allowing the wine’s aromas to open without muting its richness. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for mature blue cheeses, foie gras, fruit-based desserts and dark chocolate, while it can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Because of its age, decanting should be approached carefully: stand the bottle upright, remove any sediment with a gentle decant if necessary, and taste shortly after opening to monitor its development.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville is closely connected with Kloster Eberbach, one of Germany’s most historic wine institutions, founded by Cistercian monks in 1136. The estate has played a formative role in the development of Rheingau viticulture and is recognised for its long tradition of producing age-worthy wines from the region’s most distinguished vineyards. Assmannshäuser Höllenberg is especially significant for its Spätburgunder, making this 1970 Beerenauslese a compelling example of the estate’s historic winemaking heritage.
