Description
A remarkable piece of German wine history, the Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz Oppenheimer Krötenbrunnen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1949 offers a rare opportunity to experience a mature dessert wine from one of Rheinhessen’s best-known vineyard sites. Produced in the exceptional Trockenbeerenauslese style, it was made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes affected by noble rot and has been carefully preserved in its original 0.7-litre bottle.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show the deep, evolved colour typical of a mature Riesling dessert wine, with possible golden to amber tones developed over more than seven decades. Its bouquet combines honeyed richness with notes of dried apricot and ripe peach, while further bottle age may have added layers of preserved fruit and mellow complexity.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and sweet, supported by a pleasant Riesling acidity that helps balance its concentration. The wine is a fully mature historical bottling and should be approached for its rarity, provenance and evolved character rather than conventional long-term cellaring; its condition and storage history will be especially important when opening.
Production
The wine comes from Oppenheimer Krötenbrunnen, a celebrated vineyard site in Rheinhessen known for conditions well suited to Riesling. The grapes were hand-selected after remaining on the vine to ripen and dehydrate, with noble rot concentrating their natural sugars and flavours. This traditional Trockenbeerenauslese method results in an intensely sweet, richly textured wine with pronounced fruit character and balancing acidity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to emerge. It is a natural partner for elegant desserts, dried or stone fruit, crème brûlée, and dark chocolate, while its sweetness and acidity also make it excellent with blue cheese or other strongly flavoured mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring slowly can help separate any sediment; gentle aeration in the glass is preferable for this very old wine.
Producer
Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz represents the tradition of Germany’s state-run wine estates and the long-standing viticultural heritage of the Mainz area. This bottling reflects the importance of Rheinhessen’s historic vineyard sites and the region’s ability to produce noble-sweet Rieslings of remarkable longevity. As a 1949 vintage from the renowned Oppenheimer Krötenbrunnen, it is particularly suited to collectors and enthusiasts seeking a distinctive snapshot of post-war German wine history.
