Description

A remarkable piece of German wine history, the Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz Oppenheimer Herrnberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1921 is a rare dessert wine from one of Rheinhessen’s most respected vineyard sites. Produced from intensely concentrated, botrytised Riesling grapes, this historic 0.7-litre bottle offers extraordinary richness, complexity and provenance, and is presented in an elegant wooden case.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden colour with amber reflections, reflecting its remarkable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is layered with aromas of dried fruit, honey, caramel and warming spices, complemented by the complex nuances that develop during extended bottle ageing. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, with luscious sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity and a fine mineral character. The finish is notably long and graceful. At more than a century old, this is a fully mature wine intended for enjoyment now; its condition and further longevity will depend greatly on storage history and bottle preservation.

Production
The Oppenheimer Herrnberg is a renowned vineyard site in Rheinhessen, offering conditions well suited to Riesling. This Trockenbeerenauslese was made from individually selected grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, which naturally reduces the water content of the berries while intensifying their sugars and aromas. The available information does not specify the exact harvesting or vinification methods used in 1921, but the style is defined by exceptional concentration, noble sweetness and pronounced aromatic depth.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to unfold without suppressing its complexity. It is an elegant match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, honeyed pastries and mature blue cheeses, while its concentration also makes it compelling when enjoyed on its own as the final course of a special dinner. Given its age, open the bottle carefully and taste first; gentle decanting may be considered to remove sediment, but prolonged aeration is best avoided unless the wine proves robust.

Producer
Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz represents the historic tradition of Germany’s state-run wine estates and their role in cultivating and presenting wines from important regional vineyards. This 1921 bottling is a particularly evocative example of Rheinhessen’s historic Riesling culture, preserving the character of the Oppenheimer Herrnberg and the remarkable longevity possible in a great sweet wine. Its rarity, age and presentation in a wooden case make it especially suited to collectors and milestone occasions.
