Description
St. Urbans-Hof Nik Weis Goldtröpfchen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2011 is a rare, intensely sweet wine from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from exceptionally concentrated, late-harvested Riesling grapes affected by noble rot, this 375 ml half-bottle offers remarkable richness balanced by the vibrant acidity that is a hallmark of the region.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant golden to amber in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe peach, apricot, candied citrus and honey, accompanied by delicate notes of dried fruit and spice. The palate is concentrated and luscious, with layers of stone fruit, honey and marmalade supported by refreshing acidity. Its texture is rich yet poised, leading to a long, elegant finish.
As a 2011 Trockenbeerenauslese, it is already capable of delivering great pleasure, but the wine also has outstanding cellaring potential. Properly stored, wines of this style can develop further complexity over many years, gaining deeper notes of dried fruit, caramel and spice while retaining their freshness.
Production
The Goldtröpfchen vineyard in Piesport is known for its steep, sun-exposed slate slopes overlooking the Mosel, where Riesling can achieve exceptional ripeness while preserving its natural acidity. For a Trockenbeerenauslese, only individually selected, highly concentrated grapes—typically shrivelled by noble rot—are harvested by hand during a late picking. The fruit is gently pressed and fermented carefully to preserve its aromatic intensity and balance, resulting in a naturally sweet wine of great concentration.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot tart, crème brûlée, blue cheese and foie gras; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a luxurious aperitif or concluding wine. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although carefully opening the bottle and allowing it a little time in the glass can help reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
St. Urbans-Hof is a respected Mosel estate based in Leiwen and closely associated with winemaker Nik Weis, whose work highlights the character of Riesling from the Mosel and Saar. The estate farms steep, slate-rich vineyards and is known for producing wines that combine precision, mineral freshness and ageability. This Goldtröpfchen bottling reflects the exceptional pedigree of the Piesport site and the estate’s expertise with rare, small-format sweet wines.
