Description

Sclavos Wines’ 2020 Zakynthino is a distinctive expression of a rare Greek grape variety that is gradually disappearing from cultivation. Made on Kefalonia by biodynamic pioneer Evriviadis Sclavos, it offers a natural, lightly oxidative style that highlights the character of both the grape and its limestone-grown vines.

Tasting Notes
The wine is clear, golden straw-yellow, with a viscous appearance and pronounced legs. Its restrained bouquet suggests yellow fruit and dried fruit, alongside root vegetables, herbs and notes of biscuit and caramel, with a gentle sweetly oxidative character. The supplied tasting information does not describe the palate or indicate aging potential.

Production
The Zakynthino vines grow in limestone-influenced soils on Kefalonia. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, and the grapes are selectively harvested by hand before spontaneous fermentation. The wine is aged on its lees for nine months in a lightly oxidative style, allowing it to stabilise naturally; it is bottled without fining or filtration, with only a small addition of sulphur before bottling.

Evriviadis Sclavos is recognised as a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Greece and pursues a minimally interventionist approach to winemaking on the Ionian island of Kefalonia. His work with Zakynthino is especially notable: by making a thoughtful, expressive wine from a variety at risk of disappearing, he demonstrates its value and helps keep its identity in view.
