Description

Schloss Vollrads Riesling Kabinett Cabinet 1929 is a remarkable historic bottle from one of Germany’s oldest and most celebrated wine estates. Hailing from the Rheingau, this exceptionally rare Riesling reflects the prestige of the 1929 vintage and offers collectors a unique opportunity to experience a piece of German wine history in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a mature golden to amber colour, depending on storage and bottle condition. Its bouquet combines developed Riesling character with notes of peach, apricot and citrus, complemented by delicate floral nuances reminiscent of jasmine and acacia. With almost a century of bottle age, further tertiary aromas may include honey, dried fruit, petrol and subtle oxidative tones. On the palate, the wine is described as full-bodied and balanced, with the interplay of sweetness and acidity that is characteristic of fine Riesling. As with any wine of this age, the exact condition and expression will depend greatly on provenance, fill level and storage. This is best approached as a rare collectible and historic tasting experience rather than a wine expected to develop further in the conventional sense.

Production
Schloss Vollrads is situated in the Rheingau, a region renowned for its steep vineyard sites, mineral-rich soils and ideal conditions for producing distinguished Riesling. Specific details regarding the vineyard parcel, harvest and vinification of the 1929 bottling are not available. The wine is presented as a historic Riesling Kabinett from the estate, and its current character has been shaped predominantly by extended maturation in bottle.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing time for the wine to open gently in the glass. Its balance of fruit, sweetness and acidity would traditionally suit delicate fish, seafood, poultry, mature cheeses and refined desserts, although a bottle of this age may be best enjoyed on its own. Decanting is not automatically recommended: carefully stand the bottle upright, open it gently and taste first. If sediment is present or the wine appears closed, a very short decant may be appropriate, but prolonged aeration could be detrimental.

Producer
Schloss Vollrads is one of the historic estates of the Rheingau and is widely associated with the region’s long-standing Riesling tradition. The estate has been producing wine for centuries and is recognised for the cultural and historical importance of its castle, vineyards and wines. A 1929 bottling from Schloss Vollrads is especially significant as a surviving example of pre-war German Riesling and should be handled with the care appropriate to a rare, mature collectible.
