Description
A rare and highly collectible Rheingau dessert wine, the Schloss Schönborn Marcobrunner Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1962 comes from the celebrated Marcobrunn vineyard. Harvested in an exceptional German vintage, this mature Riesling combines remarkable concentration with the freshness and longevity for which the finest Trockenbeerenauslesen are renowned.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, with the colour and intensity expected from more than six decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet is marked by ripe fruit, honey and warming spice, offering both richness and complexity.
On the palate, sweet, concentrated fruit is balanced by fine acidity, creating an elegant and harmonious profile rather than a heavy one. The finish is long and layered, with the wine’s age adding further nuance. As a 1962 bottling, it is already fully mature; its further development will depend greatly on storage conditions, fill level and the condition of the cork.
Production
The wine was made from hand-selected Riesling grapes grown in the Marcobrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, one of the region’s most distinguished sites. Trockenbeerenauslese represents one of Germany’s highest traditional quality categories, reserved for individually selected, highly concentrated grapes harvested in particularly favourable conditions. The exceptional 1962 vintage provided the basis for this rare, long-lived sweet wine.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing its aromas and mature complexity to unfold in the glass. It is a natural partner for refined desserts, fruit-based pastries and blue or richly matured cheeses, and can also be enjoyed on its own as the finale to a special dinner. Decanting is not usually necessary for an aged Riesling of this style, although carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently may help separate any sediment.
Producer
Schloss Schönborn is a renowned Rheingau estate associated with the production of distinguished Riesling wines from the region’s historic vineyard sites. Its Marcobrunn bottlings are particularly prized for their concentration, elegance and ageing potential. This 1962 Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare example of the estate’s historic wines and will appeal especially to collectors of mature German Riesling.
