Description

Schloss Schönborn Marcobrunner Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1915 is an exceptionally rare Rheingau sweet wine and a remarkable surviving piece of German wine history. Produced from meticulously selected Riesling grapes grown in the celebrated Marcobrunn vineyard, this limited 0.7-litre bottle comes from a vintage shaped by the difficult conditions of the First World War.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, reflecting its extraordinary age and concentration. Its mature bouquet is rich and layered, with notes of ripe peach, apricot and honey complemented by an attractive mineral character. On the palate, it offers impressive richness and complexity, balanced by the fresh acidity that is essential to great Riesling. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering fruit, mineral notes and a graceful freshness. As a wine over a century old, its condition and development will depend greatly on storage and bottle provenance; it is best appreciated as a historic collector’s wine rather than judged solely by modern aging expectations.

Production
The grapes were hand-selected from the steep slopes of the Marcobrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, a site renowned for producing distinguished Riesling. Trockenbeerenauslese represents one of Germany’s highest traditional quality classifications, made from individually selected, highly concentrated berries. Detailed production records for this 1915 bottle are limited, but the wine reflects the exceptional concentration and balance associated with this rare style.

Food & Serving
Best served lightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing its mature aromas and sweetness to unfold without suppressing its complexity. It can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine, or paired with foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée or mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not always advisable for a wine of this age; if necessary, carefully stand the bottle upright, remove any sediment and decant gently immediately before serving.

Producer
Schloss Schönborn is a long-established Rheingau estate associated with the production of high-quality Riesling from prestigious vineyard sites. Its Marcobrunn wines are particularly prized for their depth, elegance and ability to develop over time. This 1915 Trockenbeerenauslese is a highly collectible example, notable both for its exceptional style and for having survived from a period when wine production was severely restricted by the First World War.
