Description

A rare and highly mature Rheingau Riesling from the historic 1971 vintage, this 0.35-litre bottle of Schloss Schönborn Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Trockenbeerenauslese is a remarkable piece of German wine history. Made from intensely ripe Riesling grapes selected as individual shrivelled berries, it offers exceptional concentration, sweetness and longevity—ideal for collectors and lovers of mature dessert wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, with the colour and intensity expected from a well-aged Trockenbeerenauslese. Its complex bouquet reveals layers of ripe and dried fruit, honey, candied citrus and warm spice, with further mature notes likely to have developed over its long bottle ageing. On the palate, it is concentrated and full-bodied, balancing rich sweetness with a refreshing thread of acidity. The finish is long and persistent. As a 1971 wine, its condition and evolution will naturally depend on storage, but a well-preserved bottle may offer a fascinating, fully mature drinking experience.

Production
Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg is a Rheingau vineyard site associated with Riesling of notable richness and finesse. Trockenbeerenauslese is produced from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes affected by noble rot, which concentrates sugars, acidity and flavour. The resulting wine is typically made in small quantities and matured slowly, allowing its intense fruit, sweetness and acidity to develop remarkable complexity over time.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, so that the wine’s aromas and mature nuances can fully emerge. It is a luxurious match for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and desserts featuring caramel, vanilla or dried fruit; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not usually essential for an old Riesling, and gentle handling is recommended. If sediment is present, carefully stand the bottle upright before opening and decant briefly if necessary.

Producer
Schloss Schönborn is one of the established historic estates of Germany’s Rheingau, a region renowned for producing world-class Riesling. The estate’s wines reflect the area’s tradition of combining ripe fruit, pronounced acidity and long ageing potential. This Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Trockenbeerenauslese represents the exceptional sweet-wine style for which the Rheingau has long been celebrated, while its 1971 vintage makes it particularly appealing to collectors of mature German wines.
