Description

A rare piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1969 Schloss Schönborn Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a beautifully mature dessert wine from one of Germany’s most prestigious growing regions. Produced from carefully selected, naturally concentrated grapes, it combines remarkable sweetness with the refreshing acidity that gives great Riesling its longevity. With its age, rarity and classic Rheingau provenance, it is an appealing choice for collectors and lovers of historic wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its long bottle maturation. On the nose, it offers an intense and refined combination of honey, ripe apricot and peach, with the developed, concentrated character expected from a mature Trockenbeerenauslese. The palate is full-bodied and richly sweet, yet balanced by lively acidity and persistent fruitiness, creating a harmonious and elegant finish. At more than five decades old, this is a fully mature wine intended to be enjoyed for its complexity and provenance rather than cellared indefinitely. As with any historic bottle, its condition and precise evolution will depend on storage, fill level and cork integrity.

Production
The wine comes from the Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg vineyard in the Rheingau, a region renowned for producing distinguished Riesling with a balance of ripeness and acidity. Trockenbeerenauslese represents one of Germany’s most concentrated wine styles: individually selected, shrivelled grapes—often influenced by noble rot—are harvested by hand to capture their intense sweetness and flavour. According to the available information, the wine was matured in oak casks, contributing to its depth and rounded character.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C in small white-wine glasses to highlight its aromas and balance. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and apricot or peach tarts; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative final course. Decanting is not usually necessary, but the bottle should be stood upright before opening and handled carefully if sediment is present. Given its age, a gentle decant immediately before serving may be appropriate.

Producer
Schloss Schönborn is a historic Rheingau estate associated with the production of high-quality Riesling and with the distinguished vineyards around Hattenheim. The estate’s wines reflect the region’s long tradition of combining ripe, expressive fruit with the structure and acidity needed for extended ageing. This 1969 bottling offers a particularly evocative example of that heritage, presenting a rare snapshot of mature Rheingau Trockenbeerenauslese.
