Description
A rare 1978 sweet Riesling from Schloss Schönborn, combining the concentrated character of Beerenauslese with the exceptional precision associated with Eiswein. Sourced from the renowned Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg vineyard in the Rheingau, this mature dessert wine offers remarkable depth, balance and cellaring history in a 0.7-litre bottle.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its long development in bottle. Its bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe peach, apricot and honey, complemented by the layered, mature nuances expected from a well-aged sweet Riesling.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously sweet, with vibrant acidity providing balance and keeping the wine fresh rather than heavy. Concentrated fruit, honeyed richness and a long, lingering finish define the experience. With more than four decades of bottle age, it is already an exceptionally mature wine and should be enjoyed according to its present condition; well-stored examples may continue to evolve gracefully.
Production
The wine comes from the Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg in the Rheingau, a site known for producing elegant and age-worthy Rieslings. Its Eiswein-Beerenauslese designation indicates an especially rare combination of concentrated, naturally sweet fruit: Beerenauslese-style selection of individually ripe berries together with the concentration associated with grapes harvested under frost conditions. The 1978 vintage has since matured extensively in bottle, developing additional complexity and depth. Specific harvesting and vinification details are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, allowing the wine’s aromas to open in the glass. It is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tarts, crème brûlée, foie gras and selected blue cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a luxurious aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not essential for a mature sweet Riesling; instead, open it carefully and pour gently, using a small decanter only if sediment is present or additional aeration is desired.
Producer
Schloss Schönborn is a historic Rheingau estate associated with the production of distinguished Rieslings from some of the region’s finest vineyards. Its wines are valued for their combination of ripe fruit, balancing acidity and long ageing potential. This 1978 bottling represents the traditional prestige of the Rheingau’s noble sweet wines and offers a rare opportunity to experience a mature expression from the Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg.
