Description
A remarkable 1964 Hattenheimer Wisselbrunn Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Cabinet from Schloss Reinhartshausen, presented as an “ex Château 2018” release. Made from intensely concentrated, naturally sweet Riesling grapes, this exceptionally mature Rheingau wine offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth and longevity of a historic German vintage.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its complex bouquet combines ripe and dried fruit with notes of honey, sweet spice and mature cellar character. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balanced by a refreshing thread of acidity that keeps the sweetness poised and precise. A long, persistent finish completes this remarkable bottle. At more than half a century old, it is ready to enjoy now, with its condition and storage history being especially important; well-preserved bottles may continue to evolve gracefully in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from the Hattenheimer Wisselbrunn vineyard in Germany’s Rheingau, a region renowned for producing expressive, long-lived Riesling. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, the wine was made from highly concentrated, late-harvested grapes affected by noble rot, resulting in exceptional sweetness and intensity. Specific details of the original harvesting and vinification are not provided, but the “ex Château 2018” designation indicates that the bottle was released from estate-held stocks in 2018.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the mature aromas to unfold in the glass. This dessert Riesling is a superb match for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and crème brûlée, while its acidity also makes it an elegant partner for mildly spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is generally not essential for an old sweet Riesling, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a short period of aeration in the glass is usually preferable.
Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic wine estate in Hattenheim, within the Rheingau, one of Germany’s most respected Riesling regions. The estate’s wines are associated with the area’s tradition of producing refined, age-worthy Rieslings, particularly from prestigious vineyard sites such as Wisselbrunn. This 1964 bottling represents a notable piece of Rheingau wine history and benefits from its “ex Château 2018” provenance.
