Description
A rare collector’s wine from the exceptional 1959 vintage, the Schloss Reinhartshausen Hattenheimer Wisselbrunn Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Cabinet combines the intensity of noble sweetness with the character of more than five decades of careful cellaring. Released as “ex Château 2018,” it offers a unique opportunity to experience a mature Rheingau Riesling with remarkable provenance and limited availability.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its long maturation in bottle. Its bouquet is intense and complex, with aromas of ripe and dried fruit, honey, sweet spice and mature Riesling nuances. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied and generously sweet, while a balancing vein of acidity provides freshness and prevents the wine from becoming heavy. A wine of this age and style is best appreciated for its evolved character and extraordinary rarity; when well stored, it may continue to develop in bottle, although its condition should be assessed carefully upon opening.
Production
Produced from Riesling grapes in Hattenheim’s Wisselbrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, this Trockenbeerenauslese represents an exceptionally concentrated style made from highly ripe, botrytised grapes. The wine was matured and preserved at Schloss Reinhartshausen for more than 50 years before its 2018 ex-Château release. Specific details regarding the harvest selection and vinification are not provided, but the wine’s intense sweetness, concentration and balance are characteristic of this prestigious category.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s aromas to unfold in the glass. Its concentrated sweetness and lively acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, blue cheese and other mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but a careful decant may help separate any mature sediment; alternatively, open gently and pour slowly into a suitable glass.
Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic wine estate in the Rheingau, a region renowned for the quality and longevity of its Rieslings. The estate’s wines reflect the traditional importance of Hattenheim and its prestigious vineyard sites. This 1959 bottling, preserved at the château and released in limited quantities in 2018, is particularly significant for collectors seeking mature German Riesling with château provenance.
