Description

A rare piece of Rheingau wine history, the 1949 Schloss Reinhartshausen Hattenheimer Wisselbrunn Riesling Beerenauslese reflects one of Germany’s most prestigious sweet-wine classifications. Produced from hand-selected Riesling berries in the steep Wisselbrunn vineyard, this 0.7-litre bottle comes from a remarkable post-war vintage, when German wine production was still heavily restricted.

Tasting Notes
The wine is described as showing a rich golden colour, with the depth and concentration expected from a mature Beerenauslese. Its aromatic profile is intensely expressive, offering ripe peach and apricot alongside notes of honey and preserved fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied and sweet, supported by a balancing thread of Riesling acidity. The finish is long, rounded and pleasantly persistent. At more than seven decades old, this is a fully mature wine best approached as a historic drinking experience; its condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on provenance and storage.

Production
The wine comes from the steep slopes of the Hattenheimer Wisselbrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, where Riesling is hand-selected for Beerenauslese production. This classification is reserved for exceptionally ripe, concentrated grapes and is made only in outstanding years. The available information does not specify the exact harvest or vinification methods, but the wine’s style is defined by its natural sweetness, concentration and characteristic Riesling acidity.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally at around 10–12°C, with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie or blue and mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential for such an old bottle, although careful decanting may help separate any sediment; open gently and taste shortly after opening to assess its condition.

Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in Germany’s Rheingau, a region internationally renowned for its Riesling and for producing some of the world’s finest naturally sweet wines. The estate’s Hattenheim wines reflect the area’s long-standing tradition of cultivating premium Riesling, while this 1949 Beerenauslese offers a particularly rare connection to the region’s post-war wine heritage.
