Description
A remarkable Rheingau Riesling from the exceptional 1959 vintage, the Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Rheinhell Trockenbeerenauslese Cabinet is a rare example of fully mature German sweet wine. Released from the château cellar in 2018, this 0.7-litre bottle combines historic provenance with the concentration, freshness and longevity associated with top-quality Trockenbeerenauslese.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, potentially with amber highlights developed through its long maturation. Its bouquet is intensely fragrant, offering layers of ripe peach, apricot, honey and dried-fruit character, with the complex, evolved notes expected from a Riesling that has spent decades in the cellar.
On the palate, it is rich and luscious, balancing pronounced sweetness with lively acidity. The concentrated fruit and honeyed tones are supported by freshness, giving the wine poise rather than heaviness and leading to a long, lingering finish. At more than six decades old, it is a mature collector’s wine and is best enjoyed now, provided the bottle has been stored under appropriate conditions.
Production
The grapes were hand-selected and harvested by hand from the steep slopes of Erbacher Rheinhell in the Rheingau. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, the wine belongs to one of Germany’s highest Prädikat categories, traditionally made from highly concentrated, naturally shrivelled grapes, often affected by noble rot. The wine was produced in 1959 and subsequently matured in the cellars of Schloss Reinhartshausen before being removed from the estate’s treasury in 2018.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing its mature aromas and texture to develop in the glass. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tarts, crème brûlée and blue or strongly flavoured cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but a careful opening and brief airing in the glass can help reveal its full complexity; older bottles should be handled gently because of their age.
Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in Erbach, in the Rheingau, one of Germany’s most renowned regions for Riesling. Its wines reflect the area’s steep vineyard sites, river-influenced climate and long tradition of producing age-worthy, finely balanced sweet wines. This 1959 bottle, preserved in the estate cellar and released as “ex Chateau 2018,” offers an especially rare insight into the longevity and pedigree of Rheingau Riesling.
