Description
A rare and remarkable Rheingau treasure, the 1934 Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Rheinhell Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese offers a glimpse into the region’s historic sweet-wine tradition. Produced from individually selected, naturally concentrated Riesling grapes, this 0.7-litre bottle is a compelling collector’s wine and a testament to the extraordinary ageing potential of the variety.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden colour with amber reflections, characteristic of its considerable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet reveals layers of dried fruit, honey, caramel and warming spice, with further nuances likely to emerge as the wine opens.
On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing intense sweetness with refreshing acidity. A subtle mineral character adds definition, while the finish is notably long and persistent. Although already of exceptional maturity, a well-preserved bottle may continue to offer remarkable complexity; as with any wine from 1934, bottle condition and storage history are especially important.
Production
The wine comes from the Erbacher Rheinhell vineyard in the Rheingau, a region renowned for its Riesling and steep vineyard sites. The grapes were hand-selected at extreme ripeness for the Trockenbeerenauslese style, traditionally made from individually shrivelled berries with highly concentrated sugars and flavours. Specific details of the 1934 vinification and maturation are not available, but the wine’s concentration and longevity reflect the exceptional quality of the fruit used.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, allowing its mature aromas to develop in the glass. It is a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, mature hard cheeses and refined desserts featuring apple, pear, dried fruit, caramel or vanilla. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an after-dinner wine or contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not always necessary for an aged sweet wine of this rarity; if sediment is present, stand the bottle upright and decant very gently shortly before serving, while avoiding prolonged exposure to air.
