Description

A rare piece of Rheingau wine history, the 1949 Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Markobrunn Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Cabinet was made from exceptionally ripe, botrytised grapes and matured for decades in the estate’s cellars. Released as “ex Chateau 2018,” this limited 0.7-litre bottle offers collectors and lovers of mature sweet Riesling the chance to experience a remarkable post-war vintage from one of the Rheingau’s celebrated sites.

Tasting Notes
Now at a venerable stage of maturity, the wine is expected to show deep golden to amber hues, with the exact colour depending on storage and bottle condition. The bouquet should reveal layered aromas of honey, dried apricot, peach preserve and candied citrus, complemented by the evolved, gently oxidative notes that can develop in an exceptionally old Riesling. On the palate, its concentrated sweetness is balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity, giving the wine freshness and length despite its age. Expect a rich, silky texture and lingering flavours of preserved stone fruit, honey and sweet spices. This is a fully mature wine intended primarily for immediate enjoyment; its condition may vary from bottle to bottle, so careful storage and handling are essential.

Production
The wine comes from the renowned Erbacher Markobrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, a historic site known for producing powerful, long-lived Rieslings. The grapes were hand-selected at Trockenbeerenauslese ripeness, with noble rot caused by Botrytis cinerea concentrating their sugars and flavours. Following gentle vinification, the wine was carefully matured at Schloss Reinhartshausen for many years before being released as “ex Chateau 2018,” preserving its exceptional age and provenance.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s complex aromas to unfold in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and apricot or peach pastries. Given its great age, decanting is not essential and may be counterproductive; instead, open it carefully, allow any sediment to settle, and pour gently. It is best enjoyed on its own as a contemplative finale to a special meal.

Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic Rheingau estate in Erbach with a long-standing reputation for producing refined Rieslings from distinguished local vineyards. Its association with the Erbacher Markobrunn site reflects the region’s tradition of crafting wines capable of extraordinary longevity. This 1949 bottling, retained and matured at the estate before its 2018 release, is a particularly rare expression of that heritage and a notable addition to a collector’s cellar.
