Description
Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Markobrunn Riesling Beerenauslese Cabinet 1964 is a rare late-harvest Riesling from one of the Rheingau’s most distinguished vineyard sites. Bottled as “ex Château 2018”, it offers the exceptional opportunity to experience a mature German sweet wine that has spent decades developing depth, elegance and complexity.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, typical of a well-preserved mature Beerenauslese. Its aromatic profile is rich and layered, with notes of honey, dried apricot, ripe peach and citrus, complemented by the nuanced character that comes with long bottle ageing.
On the palate, it is decidedly sweet yet balanced, combining concentrated fruit with honeyed richness and refreshing citrus lift. The finish is long, harmonious and persistent. At this age, the wine is ready to enjoy and should be approached as a mature, fully developed Riesling; with excellent storage, it may continue to evolve, although its precise remaining potential will depend on the bottle’s provenance and condition.
Production
The wine originates from the Erbacher Markobrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, a renowned site whose conditions are particularly well suited to producing expressive Riesling. Beerenauslese wines are made from individually selected, exceptionally ripe grapes, often affected by noble rot, which concentrates their sugars, aromas and flavours. The “ex Château 2018” designation indicates that the bottle was released from château storage in 2018, adding further interest to its provenance and maturation history.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. This rich sweet Riesling is a natural partner for pâtisserie, fruit-based desserts and foie gras, while its acidity also makes it excellent with blue cheese or a carefully chosen mature cheese selection. Decanting is generally not essential, but a gentle decant may help separate any sediment and allow the wine to open; handle the bottle carefully due to its age.
Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in the Rheingau, a region celebrated for its outstanding Rieslings and prestigious vineyard sites. Its association with Erbach and the Markobrunn vineyard places this bottle within an important tradition of producing refined, age-worthy German wines. A 1964 Beerenauslese with château provenance is a particularly distinctive example for collectors and enthusiasts of mature Rheingau sweet wines.
