Description

A rare piece of Rheingau wine history, this 1952 Erbacher Markobrunn Riesling Auslese from Schloss Reinhartshausen was released from the estate’s cellars as an “ex Château 2018” bottling after approximately 66 years of maturation. Produced from a distinguished historic vintage, it offers collectors the opportunity to experience a mature German Riesling with remarkable provenance and character.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and long cellar maturation. Its bouquet is intensely expressive, with layers of ripe peach, apricot and honey complemented by subtle mature-wine complexity. On the palate, the sweetness is balanced by lively acidity, giving the wine freshness and definition despite its age. A refined mineral note emerges through the long, elegant finish. As a wine that has already spent decades maturing in the Schloss Reinhartshausen cellars, it is ready to enjoy now; further ageing should be considered only with excellent storage conditions and an understanding that development will be highly individual.

Production
Made from Riesling grapes grown in the Erbacher Markobrunn vineyard in Germany’s Rheingau, this Auslese represents a selection of particularly ripe, high-quality fruit from the 1952 vintage. The wine was matured in the cellars of Schloss Reinhartshausen for around 66 years before being released from the estate’s Schatzkammer in 2018. Specific details regarding harvest and vinification are not available, but the extended cellar ageing has clearly shaped its depth, balance and mature character.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow its aromas and mature nuances to unfold. Its balance of sweetness and acidity makes it an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tarts, crème brûlée and blue or mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not essential, and for such an old wine gentle handling is recommended; if sediment is present, carefully stand the bottle upright before serving and decant slowly immediately prior to tasting.

Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is an established Rheingau estate associated with the production and careful preservation of Riesling wines from the region’s renowned vineyards. Its cellaring of this 1952 Erbacher Markobrunn Auslese until its 2018 release highlights a strong tradition of maturation and provenance. This bottling is particularly significant as a rare surviving example of a mature post-war Rheingau Riesling, making it appealing to both collectors and enthusiasts of historic German wines.
