Description

A rare Rheingau treasure from the exceptional 1971 vintage, this Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was matured in the cellars of Schloss Reinhartshausen before being released as “ex Chateau 2018.” Trockenbeerenauslese is among Germany’s highest Prädikat classifications, reserved for intensely concentrated wines made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes—making this 0.7-litre bottle a remarkable choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting more than five decades of careful ageing. Its mature bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, honey and dried fruit, complemented by the complex notes that develop in a venerable sweet Riesling. On the palate, it is opulent and concentrated, yet lifted by vibrant acidity that keeps the sweetness beautifully balanced. The finish is long and lingering, with layers of honeyed fruit and mature Riesling character. A wine of this age is ready to enjoy now, and its provenance and balance give it considerable collector appeal. As with all mature wines, bottle condition and storage history are important considerations.

Production
The wine comes from the renowned Erbacher Marcobrunn vineyard in the Rheingau, a historic site celebrated for producing powerful, age-worthy Rieslings. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually hand-selected grapes that have become highly concentrated through noble rot and natural dehydration, resulting in exceptional sweetness and intensity. Harvested in 1971, the wine was subsequently matured at Schloss Reinhartshausen and removed from its cellar in 2018 as an “ex Chateau” release.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas and complexity to unfold in the glass. It is a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and refined pastries, while its acidity also makes it especially enjoyable with lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Decanting is generally not necessary; instead, stand the bottle upright before opening and pour carefully, or use a gentle decant if sediment is present.

Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in Erbach, in the heart of the Rheingau, a region internationally recognised for its outstanding Riesling. Its wines are associated with the area’s celebrated vineyard sites and with the long ageing traditions that allow great German Rieslings to develop remarkable complexity. This mature 1971 bottling, released from the estate’s cellar in 2018, offers a particularly rare glimpse into the region’s vinous heritage.
