Description

A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, the Schloss Eltz Rauenthaler Pfaffenberg Riesling Auslese 1921 comes from one of Rauenthal’s renowned vineyard sites. Harvested more than a century ago and matured in bottle ever since, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth and complexity of an exceptionally old German Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden hue, reflecting its long evolution in bottle. Its bouquet is intensely mature, combining notes of preserved and ripe fruit with honey, sweet spices and subtle mineral tones. On the palate, it is full-bodied and layered, with a refined balance between sweetness and acidity. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering mineral nuances. As a 1921 bottling, it is best appreciated for its historical character and tertiary complexity rather than youthful fruit; open carefully, as very old wines can be delicate.

Production
The wine originates from the Rauenthaler Pfaffenberg vineyard in the Rheingau, a site celebrated for producing expressive Riesling. The grapes were harvested in 1921 and made as an Auslese, a category traditionally associated with selected, ripe grape clusters. It has subsequently spent decades ageing in the bottle, allowing its aromas, texture and complexity to develop.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing its mature aromas to unfold in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural match for refined desserts, fruit-based pastries and blue or mature cheeses, while its rarity also makes it compelling as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not automatically recommended for such an old wine: open it gently, taste immediately, and only decant shortly before serving if sediment or reduction requires it.

Producer
Schloss Eltz is associated with the historic wine culture of the Rheingau, one of Germany’s most distinguished Riesling regions. This bottle represents the enduring tradition of the estate and its celebrated vineyard sites, offering collectors and wine enthusiasts a rare glimpse into the character of a vintage from 1921.
