Description
The Schloss Eltz Rauenthaler Herberg Baiken Riesling Edelbeerenauslese 1921 is a highly rare German sweet wine from one of the Rheingau’s historic vineyard areas. From an exceptional vintage more than a century old, it offers a unique opportunity to experience the richness, balance and longevity associated with mature Riesling. Its limited availability and remarkable age make it especially compelling for collectors and lovers of historic wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep golden hue, potentially with amber tones developed through its long maturation. The nose is intensely perfumed, combining ripe and dried fruit with honeyed richness, delicate spice and the complex mature aromas expected of a well-preserved sweet wine of this age.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously sweet, with concentrated fruit, honey and spice balanced by refreshing acidity. The finish is long, lingering and pleasantly layered. Given its 1921 vintage, the wine should be considered fully mature and is best enjoyed now; its condition will depend greatly on storage, provenance and the individual bottle.
Production
The wine comes from the steep Rheingau slopes of Rauenthaler Herberg and Baiken, sites known for producing expressive Riesling with a strong balance of ripeness and acidity. The grapes were carefully hand-selected to achieve the concentration required for an Edelbeerenauslese, a rare and richly sweet style made from exceptionally ripe berries. Specific details of the original vinification and maturation are not available, but the wine’s extraordinary age reflects the impressive long-term potential of traditionally made Rheingau Riesling.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas and sweetness to unfold in the glass. It is a natural partner for refined desserts, fruit-based pastries, crème brûlée and blue or washed-rind cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and gently decanting to remove any sediment may be advisable, depending on its storage history.
