Description

Schloss Eltz Eltviller Sonnenberg Riesling Auslese 1964 is a rare, mature German sweet wine from one of the Rheingau’s distinguished vineyard sites. Bottled in the classic 0.7-litre format, this historic vintage offers collectors and wine lovers the opportunity to experience the depth and elegance that well-preserved Riesling can develop over decades.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous golden colour, reflecting both its age and its Auslese classification. Its bouquet is complex and gently evolved, with notes of ripe apple, citrus peel and honey, alongside the mature richness associated with aged Riesling. On the palate, it is full-bodied and layered, balanced by refreshing acidity and finishing with impressive length. At more than half a century old, it should be approached as a mature wine; its condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on storage and bottle provenance.

Production
The grapes came from the Eltviller Sonnenberg vineyard in the Rheingau, a site known for producing expressive Riesling with a natural balance between richness and acidity. As an Auslese, the wine was made from selectively harvested, naturally ripe grapes, although detailed information on the 1964 harvest and vinification is not available. The wine’s mature character reflects extended bottle ageing rather than a youthful, fruit-driven style.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to unfold in the glass. Its honeyed fruit and lively acidity make it a natural partner for fish in delicate sauces, roast or lightly spiced poultry, and a selection of mature or blue cheeses. Decanting is not essential for an older Riesling, as prolonged exposure to air may diminish its delicate aromas; instead, open carefully and taste immediately, decanting only if there is visible sediment or the wine benefits from a short period of aeration.

Producer
Schloss Eltz represents a historic German wine name associated with the Rheingau, one of the country’s most important regions for Riesling. The Eltviller Sonnenberg bottling reflects the traditional focus on site expression, noble sweetness and ageability that has long defined premium Rheingau wines. As with many wines from this era, detailed producer records and historical achievements may be limited, adding to the character and collectability of this mature bottle.
