Description

Created in 1986 as a flagship wine of San Michele Appiano, Sanct Valentin Pinot Grigio is a distinctive, oak-aged expression of Pinot Grigio from South Tyrol. Its combination of ripe fruit, fresh mountain character and a velvety texture sets it apart, and it has received 94 points from James Suckling.

Tasting Notes
Deep straw yellow in the glass, it opens with aromas of apple and ripe pear, complemented by elegant vanilla and subtle toasted, smoky notes. The palate is full and well balanced, with bright freshness, a creamy texture and a long, harmonious finish.

Production
The Pinot Grigio grapes come from vineyards in Appiano Monte, where the local microclimate helps build aromatic concentration while preserving freshness. Vineyard work follows sustainable principles, and the fruit is carefully selected before fermentation. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in small oak barrels, followed by 11 months of ageing on the lees in the same barrels. The wine’s freshness and structure give it promising ageing potential.

Food & Serving
Enjoy it with fish soups, grilled or roasted white meat, and other dishes that suit a full-bodied, oak-aged white. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to let its texture and aromas show. A brief decant or time in the glass can help open up its layered character.

Producer
San Michele Appiano is based in Appiano, in South Tyrol, a region known for its mountain-influenced white wines. Sanct Valentin Pinot Grigio was created by winemaker Hans Terzer and has become a flagship bottling for the estate. Its recognition, including a 94-point score from James Suckling, reflects the wine’s standing as a notable expression of the region’s winemaking tradition.
