Description
San Michele Appiano’s Sanct Valentin Gewürztraminer is a beautifully expressive Alto Adige white, made entirely from Traminer Aromatico and crafted to showcase the character of the region’s high-altitude vineyards. With its aromatic intensity, refined structure, and subtle touch of sweetness, it stands out as one of the most distinctive wines in the portfolio of this acclaimed producer.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden-yellow color that hints at its aromatic richness. The nose is intensely perfumed, with classic notes of rose petals, exotic fruit, and Eastern spices, giving the wine a layered and alluring bouquet.
On the palate, it is powerful and complex, with generous texture, vivid aromatics, and a delicate hint of residual sweetness that adds depth and length without overwhelming the freshness. The finish is persistent and elegant, and while already highly enjoyable, it should also reward short to medium-term cellaring for added nuance.
Production
The grapes come from selected vineyard sites in Cortaccia, Caldaro, and Appiano in Alto Adige, where the cool Alpine influence and varied soils help preserve aroma and balance. Harvest is carried out by hand, followed by maceration on the skins and gentle pressing to extract the variety’s signature aromatic profile. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve purity, precision, and freshness.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for aromatic and lightly spiced dishes, including Thai or Vietnamese cuisine, shellfish, foie gras, smoked salmon, and rich poultry preparations. It is best served well chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a short aeration can help open up its expressive bouquet.
