Description
San Giovenale Habemus Etichetta Nera is a striking 100% Grenache from Lazio that captures the character of Tuscia with real precision and depth. Crafted by the certified organic estate of San Giovenale, it combines clay-rich soils, coastal breezes, and long élevage to create a wine with both power and elegance. It is also a subtle tribute to the ancient Etruscan landscape that helped shape this part of central Italy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep, expressive red hue with the concentration you would expect from a 15% Grenache. The nose is inviting and layered, with ripe red berries, dark cherry, Mediterranean herbs, spice, and a hint of savoury earth.
The palate is full-bodied and warm, yet balanced by freshness and a refined, silky texture. The long barrel ageing adds complexity, bringing notes of spice, toast, and gentle oak integration. This is a wine with the structure to develop further in bottle over the next several years, especially as its fruit and savoury elements continue to harmonise.
Production
The grapes come from Tuscia in Lazio, where clay soils help retain water and give the wine its depth and shape, while sea breezes preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Harvesting is followed by immediate destemming and pressing within one hour, an approach that helps protect purity and limit oxidation. The wine is then aged for 30 months in barrique and a further 6 months in bottle before release.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for richly flavoured dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, grilled beef, game, mature hard cheeses, or Mediterranean cuisine with herbs and roasted vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the aromas open fully and soften the wine’s structure.
Producer
San Giovenale was founded in 2006 by Emanuele Pangrazi and has quickly become one of the more distinctive organic producers in Lazio. The estate is closely associated with a modern revival of quality winemaking in Tuscia, where attention to terroir and careful cellar work are central to the style. Its commitment to organic viticulture and ambitious, site-driven wines has earned it recognition for bringing a refined, contemporary voice to this historic region.
