Description
Salcheto Nobile di Montepulciano Salco 2017 is a deeply expressive Tuscan red that showcases Sangiovese Grosso at its most refined and ageworthy. Crafted from the estate’s oldest vineyards and produced only in the best years, Salco is Salcheto’s flagship interpretation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This 2017 vintage strikes a compelling balance between richness, elegance, and a distinctive sense of place rooted in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Salco 2017 shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and emerging complexity. The nose opens with ripe red and black cherries, wild berries, and plum compote, entwined with notes of dried rose petals, violet, and Mediterranean herbs. Subtle layers of tobacco leaf, leather, sweet spices, and a touch of balsamic and underbrush gradually unfold as the wine takes in air.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a refined tannic structure that feels firm but polished. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant, and blackberry are supported by savory tones of licorice, dark cocoa, and earthy minerality, all lifted by a vibrant, food-friendly acidity typical of great Sangiovese Grosso. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of spice and dried fruit that suggest excellent cellaring potential. Enjoyable now with a proper decant, the 2017 Salco has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years from vintage, gaining further tertiary complexity over time.
Production
The Salco cuvée is sourced from Salcheto’s older Sangiovese Grosso vines in the hills around Montepulciano, where clay-limestone soils, good elevation, and significant day–night temperature swings promote concentration, aromatic complexity, and balanced ripeness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, allowing careful selection of only perfectly mature clusters. In the cellar, Salcheto combines a low-intervention philosophy with precise, modern winemaking: gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, extended maceration to extract color and tannin, and careful aging in a combination of large barrels and smaller oak to refine structure without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that reflects its terroir with clarity while offering the depth and longevity expected of a top-tier Nobile di Montepulciano.
Food & Serving
Salcheto Nobile di Montepulciano Salco 2017 is a natural partner for hearty Tuscan-inspired dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, and aged pecorino Toscano. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, and roasted game birds, where its vibrant acidity and savory complexity can shine. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally in large bowled glasses. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving will help the wine open up, soften the tannins, and reveal the full spectrum of its aromatics.
