Description
A remarkably rare bottle from the legendary 1937 vintage, this Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Beerenauslese represents the age-worthy, sweet-wine tradition of Reichsrat von Buhl and the Pfalz. Sourced from one of Forst’s most distinguished vineyards, it is a historic collector’s wine as well as a luxurious dessert wine, offering a unique opportunity to experience a piece of German wine history.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, with its colour and intensity reflecting its considerable age. The nose is rich and expressive, revealing aromas of ripe peach, apricot, honey and mature sweet-wine complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and luscious, with concentrated fruit balanced by refreshing acidity. The finish is long, smooth and pleasantly persistent.
As a 1937 Beerenauslese, this is a wine to approach with realistic expectations: its condition will depend greatly on provenance, storage and ullage. Well-preserved examples of this style can remain fascinating for decades, developing deeper notes of dried fruit, caramel and spice over time.
Production
Forster Kirchenstück is one of the Pfalz’s most celebrated vineyard sites, known for producing wines with both richness and mineral character. Beerenauslese is made from individually selected, exceptionally ripe grapes, often affected by noble rot, which concentrates the fruit, sugar and aromatic intensity. The Riesling grapes would have been carefully harvested and fermented to preserve the balance between natural sweetness and vibrant acidity; specific production records for this historic 1937 bottling are not available.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its concentrated sweetness makes it an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot tart, crème brûlée and mild blue or washed-rind cheeses; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not usually essential, but a careful stand-up period and gentle decant may help separate any sediment—while minimising exposure to air, which can be demanding for a wine of this age.
Producer
Reichsrat von Buhl, founded in Deidesheim in 1849, is one of the historic names of the Pfalz and has long been associated with fine Riesling and the region’s prestigious vineyard sites. The estate’s reputation was established through its focus on expressive, terroir-driven wines, including the great sweet wines for which Germany was historically renowned. This 1937 Forster Kirchenstück Beerenauslese is a particularly rare example of that heritage, and should be regarded as a collector’s bottle whose condition and provenance are central to its value.
