Description

Reichsrat von Buhl’s 1945 Deidesheimer Leinhöhle Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare and exceptionally mature German sweet wine from one of the Pfalz’s historic estates. Produced from highly concentrated, late-harvested Riesling grapes, this remarkable bottle combines richness, freshness and the complexity that only decades of careful maturation can bring. As a 1945 vintage, it also represents a fascinating piece of German wine history.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, characteristic of its age and concentration. Its intense bouquet reveals layers of honey, ripe peach, dried apricot and citrus, complemented by subtle vanilla and mature, developed notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, balanced by a refreshing acidity that keeps the sweetness lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and complex, with lingering fruit, honeyed nuances and remarkable persistence. A wine of this age should be approached with appropriate expectations: the condition of the individual bottle, its fill level and storage history are important factors. If well preserved, it may offer a memorable tasting experience, although it is best enjoyed now rather than held for further development.

Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is Germany’s highest traditional Prädikat category and is made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes, often affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). These grapes achieve exceptional sugar and flavour concentration while retaining the Riesling grape’s characteristic acidity. The 1945 wine is associated with the historic Deidesheimer Leinhöhle vineyard in the Pfalz; detailed information about the original harvest and vinification is not available here.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, pâté and rich fruit-based desserts, while it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine. Decanting is not usually necessary for an old sweet Riesling and may expose it unnecessarily to oxygen; instead, open it carefully and pour gently, decanting only if sediment is present.

Producer
Reichsrat von Buhl is one of the historic estates of Deidesheim in the Pfalz, a region renowned for elegant Rieslings and distinguished vineyard sites. The winery has long been associated with the production of high-quality, terroir-driven wines, including prestigious sweet wines from sites such as Leinhöhle. Its longstanding reputation and deep connection to the Deidesheim wine tradition make this 1945 bottling a particularly significant example of mature Pfalz Riesling.
