Quintarelli’s 2019 Valpolicella Classico Superiore is a refined expression of the historic hills around Verona, made from Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella. Its long maturation in large Slavonian oak casks sets it apart from more fruit-forward Valpolicella, giving the wine depth and polish while preserving an elegant, distinctly local character.
Tasting Notes
A garnet-red colour leads into aromas of sour cherry and ripe raspberry, layered with hints of wood smoke and graphite. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with red-fruit flavours, wild herbs and oak framed by persistent mineral notes and an elegant finish.
Its balanced structure and freshness give it the potential to develop further in bottle; careful cellaring should reward patience with added complexity.
Production
The grapes come from the first hills around Negrar, at approximately 350 metres above sea level. A moderately continental climate, cooled by breezes from the Lessini Mountains, brings useful day-to-night temperature variation, while predominantly limestone soils contribute precision and a clear sense of place. The fruit is harvested by hand and carefully selected. After gentle pressing, the must macerates for around two months and ferments spontaneously with native yeasts; the wine then matures for six years in large Slavonian oak casks.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C, allowing the wine to show its aromatic detail without masking its freshness. It pairs well with roast or grilled meats, game, mushroom dishes and mature cheeses. Decant for about an hour before serving if the wine seems reticent, while older bottles may benefit from a gentler pour to preserve their delicacy.
Producer
Giuseppe Quintarelli is one of Valpolicella’s most revered producers, known for a patient, traditional approach that gives time and character a central role in winemaking. Based in the region around Negrar, the estate is closely associated with the classic wines of Verona, including its long-aged Valpolicella and Amarone. Its distinctive, low-intervention style has earned it an enduring reputation among collectors and lovers of traditional Italian wine.
