Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2023 is a fortified wine with Touriga Nacional from the Douro, with schist-grown blueberry fruit, violet and black pepper depth. It feels unmistakably Noval in its dark perfume and polished power. The 12 parcel selection gives the wine a broad estate voice, from ripe fruit to a cool eucalyptus edge.
About the Wine
The 2023 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is drawn from 12 parcels on the Noval estate. Most face southwest over the Douro, with two east-facing plots included in the selection. The blend brings together Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão and Tinta Amarela grown on schist soils. Picking ran from 10 to 25 September, which gives this release a clear harvest fingerprint. Sustainable certification sits behind the vineyard work. The fruit reads dark and floral rather than simply sweet.
Fermentation took place in granite lagares, a detail that matters for the shape of this 2023. The young fortified wine then spent 18 months at the Quinta before bottling. That élevage keeps the estate imprint close to the wine. The 20% alcohol sits inside a sweet Port frame, with firm fruit and fine tannin carrying the weight. The lagar work shows in the silky grip across the palate. A thread of eucalyptus runs through the dark berry core.
Tasting Notes
The nose opens with blueberry and violet, then eucalyptus gives the 2023 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port its cool Noval lift. Tar, dried fig and black pepper follow, with a darker note that recalls Christmas cake rather than fresh plum jam. The palate is sweet and concentrated, with very fine tannins that spread slowly rather than bite. Its finish stays lively for a young Vintage Port, and the final taste brings cracked pepper, dried fruit and a clean blue-fruited echo. Drinking window: 2030-2060.
Food Pairing
Serve Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2023 with aged cheese that has salt and grain. A wedge of mature cheddar or blue Stilton will meet the wine’s blueberry sweetness and peppery tannin. For a Portuguese direction, pour it with Queijo Terrincho from Trás-os-Montes or a Douro almond tart. Dark chocolate torte is the obvious dessert match, especially one with cocoa bitterness rather than heavy frosting. It also suits a dessert plate with dried figs, walnuts and a little candied orange peel, which picks up the wine’s dried fruit and eucalyptus notes.
Producer
Quinta do Noval is unusual in Port for putting a single estate at the centre of its identity. The quinta sits in the Pinhão Valley, and its name carries more weight on the label than any shipping house story. Noval is also known for Nacional, the tiny ungrafted vineyard parcel that has become one of the most famous names in fortified wine. That parcel gives the producer a rare point of reference, even when the bottle in front of you is the main Quinta do Noval Vintage Port. For this 2023, the estate selection comes from 12 parcels, so the wine feels tied to mapped pieces of Noval rather than a broad Douro recipe. The house has a gift for making sweetness feel scented and detailed, and this release shows it through violet, eucalyptus and black pepper around the dark fruit.
