Description

Querciabella Batàr 2023 is a distinguished Tuscan white wine blending Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc from high-altitude vineyards in Greve in Chianti. Dry, richly textured and distinctly mineral, it is one of Tuscany’s most celebrated white wines, shaped by Querciabella’s pioneering commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a clear, luminous golden colour. Its complex bouquet combines freshly cut wheat, propolis, honey and broom flowers with more delicate floral notes of laburnum and umbellifers. Ripe yellow plum and quince preserve add a generous fruit character, while the nose remains lifted by an underlying mineral freshness. On the palate, Batàr is broad and enveloping, with a pronounced saline richness balanced by a creamy, beautifully integrated texture. Fine oak, vibrant freshness and concentrated fruit create a layered, harmonious expression, leading to a long finish marked by distinctive saffron nuances. With its structure, acidity and depth, the 2023 vintage has excellent potential to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The grapes are sourced from high-altitude vineyards along the Ruffoli ridge in Greve in Chianti, where galestro soils are complemented by clay, schist and areas of sandstone. Chardonnay grows on warmer south-facing slopes, while Pinot Blanc comes from cooler northern parcels, helping preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed, after which both alcoholic and complete malolactic fermentation take place in French oak. The wine matures on its fine lees with weekly bâtonnage for nine to twelve months in barrels from the forests of Tronçais, Vosges and Allier, some of them new, before resting for a further six months prior to release.

Food & Serving
Serve Batàr at around 10–12°C, allowing it a little time in the glass to reveal its full aromatic range. Its saline depth and creamy texture make it an excellent partner for roasted or grilled fish, shellfish, lobster, poultry with cream-based sauces, mushroom dishes and richly flavoured vegetable preparations. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help open the wine in its youth.

Producer
Founded in the Chianti Classico region, Querciabella has become one of Tuscany’s leading advocates of sustainable, high-quality winemaking. The estate began its transition to organic farming in 1988 and is fully dedicated to biodynamic methods, allowing its diverse vineyards to express their individual character. Originally created as “Bâtard-Pinot”, the wine was renamed Batàr in 1995 to distinguish it from Burgundy’s appellations and celebrate the union of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. It has since earned international acclaim as a benchmark for refined, age-worthy Tuscan white wine.
