Description
Pontet-Canet 2016 is one of Pauillac’s most admired fifth growths, offering the depth and pedigree of a classed Bordeaux with a distinctive, more natural approach to winemaking. Produced in a standout vintage, it combines power, refinement, and a strong sense of place, making it a compelling choice for collectors and Bordeaux lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, concentrated ruby-purple color. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum, cedar, graphite, violets, and subtle spice, all unfolding with impressive purity and lift.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with ripe cassis, blackberry, tobacco, and mineral notes supported by firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long and focused, with excellent balance and the kind of concentration that promises outstanding ageing potential over two decades or more.
Production
Pontet-Canet is located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils and excellent drainage help Cabernet Sauvignon thrive. The estate is known for its biodynamic and organic farming practices, careful vineyard work, and low-intervention vinification, all aimed at expressing the character of the terroir as clearly as possible.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef Wellington, entrecôte, venison, or richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours, especially if opening in its youth, to allow the wine to fully раскрыt its aromatics and structure.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet has a long history in Pauillac and is one of the Médoc’s most respected estates. As a 5ème Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification, it has earned a strong reputation for quality and innovation, particularly under the stewardship of the Tesseron family, who helped elevate its standing through a commitment to biodynamic viticulture and precision winemaking.
