Description
Polvanera Primitivo 16 Gioia del Colle Vigneto San Benedetto Bio 2018 is a powerful, authentically southern Italian red that captures the wild, sun-drenched character of Apulia in a beautifully pure, unmasked form. Sourced from old, low-yielding Primitivo vines and crafted without heavy oak, it delivers depth, intensity and clarity of fruit in equal measure. Awarded the coveted 3 Glasses (Tre Bicchieri) in Gambero Rosso, Italy’s most influential wine guide, this cuvée has become a modern benchmark for Gioia del Colle Primitivo.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, almost opaque ruby with violet highlights, hinting at its concentration and richness. The nose is dense and expressive, with ripe mulberries, black cherries and blackberry compote at the forefront, layered with notes of plum tart and dark stone fruits. Subtle, savory accents of allspice, licorice, smoked paprika and a touch of dried Mediterranean herbs add complexity and intrigue.
On the palate, Primitivo 16 is full-bodied, fleshy and mouth-filling, yet remarkably balanced. Juicy black cherries, mulberries and baked plums unfold alongside flavors reminiscent of a freshly baked Zwetschgendatschi (plum cake) or warm cherry pastry, complete with buttery, gently toasted pastry notes. The texture is rich and velvety, supported by ripe, finely grained tannins and a vibrant, mineral backbone that recalls graphite and a faint hint of warm iron. Despite its power and likely elevated alcohol, the wine remains poised and harmonious. Enjoyable now with a brief aeration, it also has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully over the next 8–10 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
The fruit for Polvanera Primitivo 16 Vigneto San Benedetto comes from organically farmed vineyards in Gioia del Colle, in the hills of central Apulia. Here, higher elevations, cooler nights and limestone-rich soils temper the southern heat, giving Primitivo extra lift, tension and freshness compared to its coastal cousins. The vines are up to 70 years old and yields are deliberately kept very low, concentrating flavor and natural extract in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve fruit integrity, followed by an extended maceration on the skins of around four weeks to extract color, tannin and aromatic depth. Fermentation takes place over roughly four weeks, after which the wine is aged for about three years in stainless steel and in bottle, rather than oak, allowing the vineyard character, fruit purity and mineral nuance of San Benedetto to shine through unadorned.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for hearty, flavor-packed dishes: think slow-braised beef or lamb shank, ossobuco, rich ragù over orecchiette, grilled or smoked sausages, and aged hard cheeses such as Pecorino or mature Parmigiano-Reggiano. It also pairs beautifully with roasted game birds, wild boar, and dishes featuring roasted peppers, smoked paprika or sun-dried tomatoes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the alcohol in balance and the aromatics vibrant. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full spectrum of fruit, spice and mineral notes.
Producer
Polvanera is a family-run estate based in Gioia del Colle, a historic but once underappreciated appellation in Apulia that has recently taken center stage for top-quality Primitivo. Founded by Filippo Cassano, the winery has become a reference point for the region through its commitment to organic viticulture, old vines and a minimalist approach in the cellar. By focusing on higher-altitude sites, limestone soils and the natural intensity of Primitivo, Polvanera crafts wines that are powerful yet refined, with remarkable freshness for such a southern latitude. The estate’s cuvées, including the acclaimed Primitivo 16, have garnered top accolades such as Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, helping to cement Gioia del Colle’s reputation as one of Italy’s most exciting terroirs for characterful, ageworthy reds.
