Description

Peter Jakob Kühn’s 1997 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare, concentrated dessert wine from the Rheingau, presented in a half-bottle that is ideal for special occasions. Made from individually selected, intensely ripe Riesling berries, it combines remarkable sweetness with the freshness that allows great German noble-sweet wines to mature for decades.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and concentration. Its bouquet is richly perfumed, with notes of honey, ripe apricot, peach and dried fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied and lusciously sweet, yet balanced by refreshing acidity. Flavours of candied and dried fruit, honey and ripe stone fruit persist through a long, lingering finish. As a 1997 Trockenbeerenauslese, it is already mature but should continue to develop in a well-kept cellar, with its longevity depending on storage conditions.

Production
The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully selected to retain only the ripest and most concentrated berries. Produced in Germany’s Rheingau region from Riesling, this style of Trockenbeerenauslese represents one of the highest levels of natural grape sweetness in the German classification system. The region’s cool climate and river-influenced vineyards help preserve the acidity essential for balance and long ageing.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This wine is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot tart, crème brûlée, blue cheese and foie gras, while its complexity also makes it rewarding as an aperitif. Decanting is generally not necessary, although carefully pouring it into a small carafe can help reveal its aromas if the wine appears initially reserved. The 375 ml format is particularly well suited to intimate celebrations or gifting.

Producer
Peter Jakob Kühn is a respected Rheingau estate known for expressive Riesling wines that reflect the character of their vineyards and the region’s tradition of producing long-lived, noble-sweet wines. The estate’s wines are valued for their precision, concentration and balance, qualities clearly suited to a mature Trockenbeerenauslese such as this 1997 vintage.
