Description
Perillo Taurasi 2014 is a powerful and distinctive expression of Aglianico from Campania’s renowned Taurasi appellation. Produced from old, ungrafted vines in the high-altitude Calore Valley, it combines the grape’s natural depth and tannic structure with an unfiltered style that preserves its authentic character. Taurasi has long been regarded as one of southern Italy’s great age-worthy red wines, and this bottle reflects that enduring tradition.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows an intense ruby-red colour, with the depth and concentration expected from high-altitude Aglianico. Its nose is layered with aromas of wild berries and oriental spices, alongside a darker, earthy character that becomes more expressive with air.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, warm and enveloping, supported by firm, well-defined tannins and a concentrated core of ripe fruit. The finish is long and persistent, with spice and savoury nuances lingering on the palate. Its structure and balance give the 2014 vintage excellent ageing potential, and it should continue to develop complexity over many years when properly stored.
Production
The grapes come from the Calore Valley, between Castelfranci and Montemarano, where Perillo’s vineyards are rooted in high-altitude clay soils. The cooler conditions encourage a late, even ripening of Aglianico, while the presence of old, ungrafted vines—including the local “coda di cavallo” clone—adds depth and a strong sense of place. Following a careful harvest, the wine is matured in wooden barrels to soften and integrate its substantial tannins. It is bottled without filtration, preserving its concentration and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
Its firm structure and generous intensity make Perillo Taurasi 2014 an excellent partner for grilled or braised red meat, roast pork, game and richly flavoured mature cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C, allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature rather than serving it too warm. Decant for one to two hours before drinking to help open the wine and soften its tannins; older bottles should be decanted carefully, mainly to remove any natural sediment.
Producer
Perillo is a family-run producer rooted in the Taurasi area and committed to expressing the character of Aglianico through traditional, low-intervention methods. The estate’s work with old ungrafted vines in the Calore Valley gives its wines a particularly authentic connection to the local terroir. Extended maturation in wood and unfiltered bottling are central to the house style, producing structured, age-worthy Taurasi in limited quantities.
